From the publisher:
An excerpt from the author’s introduction: This is a spatial biography of an apartment in a residential tower on Danviksklippan in central Stockholm after 80 years of living. I lived in this apartment for four years and spent one day describing it, room by room. […] I wanted to write an account of the everyday life of this apartment beyond what a photo or a plan drawing could capture. The constraint of the project was to observe every room for one hour while inhabiting it (for sitting, standing, eating, bathing, etc.) and making notes. […] Over the day, nothing exceptional happened. This was expected, and it forms the framework of this exercise. After the observation, I edited the text and clarified some passages, typos, etc., without making any changes to the observations made. A brief afterscript written later as part 2, “Cross Traffic,” situates the observations in the historical and theoretical context of Sven Backström and Leif Reinius’ work as housing architects. The two parts form a manual for paying attention to the existing qualities of inhabitation and looking closely at housing architecture from the point of view of a single apartment.

Hannes Frykholm is an architect (MSc. Arch; UC Berkeley and LTH) and lecturer at the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning. Between 2021 and 2024, he was the postdoctoral researcher for the project “Living in the City”, co-chaired by Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal. Frykholm’s current research focuses on the interior urbanism of housing architecture, investigating how access to free space in residential buildings can address the challenges of high-density cities.

The book includes a series of photographs by the Umeå-based artist Mia Rogersdotter Gran. She holds an MFA in Photography from HDK-Valand, Gothenburg, and a BFA in Fine Art from Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm. Working freely between photography, video and text, Rogersdotter Gran is interested in exploring concepts such as nature, landscape and identity, and how these can be interpreted in different media and materials.
